Counseling for Teens

Embrace who you’re becoming and where you’re going.

Sound familiar?

  • “I’m not really sure who I am or what I want in life.”

  • “There’s so much change in my life right now, I feel overwhelmed.”

  • “I want healthy relationships but don’t really know what that looks like.”

  • “We want to find the kind of relationship that works for us.”

Being a teenager or young adult (especially in today’s world) is tough.

You might be wading through questions related to your future direction, your gender or sexuality, or your relationships with your partner, family, or friends. It might feel like you’re “stuck,” or it could feel like life is moving at a million miles per hour and leaving you behind. Maybe you’re struggling with weighing the opinions of others (and what society says you “should” be) with what feels true to you.

You want to feel comfortable in your own skin, in your decisions, and in your future. You know how important mental health is and you want support facing these things so you can create the kind of future you truly want.

We’re here to help you with:

  • Anxiety & worry

  • Gender & sexuality

  • Sex education

  • Perfectionism

  • Self-worth & self-esteem

  • Relationship difficulties

  • Breakups

  • Goal-setting

  • Big life changes

  • Grief & loss

  • Body image

  • Trauma, including assault or abuse

We focus on counseling for teens that helps you embrace your inherent worth, value, and strengths as a unique individual.

Connection first

You will get the most out of therapy when you feel safe, seen, and understood. So that’s where we start: by getting curious about you and building genuine connection. We don’t bring pre-conceived notions into therapy—we want to know your unique experiences, goals, and challenges.

Insight + empowerment

True change happens when it comes from within. In counseling for teens, we’ll help you get to know yourself better, from your core values to the way you show up in your relationships. As you gain this new insight into yourself, you’ll begin to feel empowered in the decisions you make, confident in expressing your thoughts or feelings, and more secure in who you are.

Conveniently online

You’re already juggling a lot right now. With convenient online therapy, you can get support from anywhere. Most teens find it easier to open up when in the comfort of their own space, and you don’t even have to change out of your pajamas! As long as you have a strong internet connection, your therapist and you can work together to create positive change in your life.

how we work

Counseling for teens can help you…

  • Feel more confident in who you are

  • Make important decisions about your future

  • Decrease anxiety or worry (and increase joy)

  • Heal from painful past experiences

  • Set healthy boundaries with family or friends

Therapy is a space where you can freely share what’s on your mind. Your therapist will help you process big questions, play out choices, and build new skills to help you better understand yourself and feel more in control of your life. Sometimes circumstances can cloud your view of yourself—we’re here to help you see and embrace your worth, value, and purpose.

  • Good question! It’s important to us that we do more than just “talk” in therapy—we want you to actually build new skills that you can put into practice in day-to-day life. That includes things like:

    • Mindfulness or breathing techniques (great for reducing anxiety)

    • Communication skills, like setting boundaries and asking for what you need

    • Exercises to help you know, accept (and ultimately like!) who you really are

  • Great question! If you have a teen that is struggling with their mental health, we understand that you likely want to be kept up-to-date with what they’re working on while in therapy. That being said, we also believe that in order for your teen to feel comfortable opening up in therapy, they need to have a space in which they feel safe and can be honest. That means ensuring that your child has confidentiality in their sessions.

Our therapists ensure that our teen clients are provided with the same confidentiality as any adult client, and we allow our teen clients to have the final say about what is shared or not shared with you (their guardian), with the exception of legal limits to confidentiality. However, we will also work with your teen to share information that we believe will be helpful for you to know and will encourage them to bring you into conversations if we believe that your inclusion will be most beneficial for their support and positive growth.

  • Modern Sessions is focused on methods that lead to deep, long-lasting healing and change, which means we go beyond just talk therapy. Our therapists are trained in multiple trauma-informed methods including EMDR, Brainspotting, and Somatic Experiencing that allow us to tailor our treatment.

The methods we use depend on each client’s unique needs—this is an open conversation between the therapist and the client about their goals and what might be most useful for them. You’ll always have the information you need to feel empowered making decisions about your therapy.

  • Yes. We want to see you step into your true identity, and that includes LGBTQIA+- and gender-affirming care for all clients.
